Now Comes The Hard Part
So I got into CalArts. But it remains to be seen if I'll be able to raise the money to go.
[insert sob story here]
Check out the bar on the right if you want to help. I would really appreciate it. I just finished my copy of Walt Disney: An American Original, and I stumbled upon this quote from Walt Disney:
The trouble with universities is that they restrict students from learning about a lot of things. The young people have to get so many credits toward their degree, and they don't have a chance to delve into other subjects. That won't be true at CalArts. Students will be able to take anything - art, drama, music, dance, writing. They'll graduate with a degree of Bachelor of Fine Arts, and if they want a Bachelor of Arts they can go to another colleges and get a few more credits...The student body of CalArts shouldn't be over two thousand, and as many as possible should reside on campus. There should be some allowance for those who are talented. yet are not students; they should be able to express themselves without worrying about grades. There will be a lot of scholarships at CalArts. We don't want any dilettantes at CalArts. We want people with talent. That will be the one factor in getting in to CalArts: talent.
Times have sure changed.

Good luck! CalArts ain't cheap but I'm thinking if you really want to get in there, you'll find a way! Just remember, there's lots of other good ways and schools to make it into animation. All the best on your journey! The animation biz is a whole lot of fun (even as mixed up as it can be)... you're going to meet some very cool people! Enjoy the ride!

Hey Dan, the donate button just sends me to the Paypal login. In case it's something wonky and you can't fix it, post your email somewhere (d at blank dot com) and people can look you up on Paypal and send money that way.
Cheers!

There are a lot of scholarships at Calarts...or some. But I think they're not available to students until they've started there. It may also be that they're restricted and/or weighted towards US citizens. I know it's true of Pell grants and some of the other low interest loans that I was able to get.
Even so it took me 16 years to pay off my loans, which covered about half my tuition. I also did work-study which gave me a few bucks to live on-very few(another US-only option IIRC). This was a long time ago and today there aren't nearly as many financial aid options for a US student.
I don't believe there's a school outside of Oxford and Cambridge that's what it's cracked up to be, really, and the best thing about any of them is being around and exposed to the other students, who will be around for the rest of your life if you work in animation anywhere in the world.
Good luck!

Thanks Justin, I fixed that for you.
Thanks Andy, I know I'll find a way. Gotta stay positive. There's so much negativity out there already :)

a lot of scholarship programs got cancelled when the Disney family pulled out funds. Also, when a lot of leading animators passed down their fortune to character animation, other calarts departments ate up the fund like starving rodents. There were barely enough money to buy new scanners for the department. Now recession hits, I can't imagine what's like this year. And yes, tons of scholarships are aimed for American citizens only. See if you can get Canadian loans from canadian banks or the government.

Oh scholarships. I heard once that Character Animation is the only department that isn't allowed full scholarship at all....
The part about being free to take classes in any discipline is funny because it's like, "pfft yeah like we have free time to take other classes"

Good for you for actually doing the donation thing. I was thinking about putting up something like that on my blog when i got accepted but i never got past the "wouldn't this be cool" phase lol.

yebkamin - Thanks for the support. You're a first year right? I think I saw you when I was down there; I recognized you from your blog at the time.
I'd imagine this article is all the buzz at CalArts right now. I'd like to apologize to everyone for throwing the school under the buss. Some of the comments on CB are very negative, and I didn't intend to hurt anyone at CalArts, or make anyone bitter.
I hope I get the opportunity to come down there so everyone can get to know the real me.

Walt had the right idea, maybe because he had a limited education as a kid. But he went far, as one artist to another, GOOD LUCK.
